Soulful Prayers from the Psalms

This page contains several soulful prayers from the Old Testament Psalms.

These passages come from the Book of Psalms, and therefore are soulful expressions and/or prayers.

Ps. 23:3 – [God] restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Ps. 25:1-2 – To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul; in you I trust, O my God.

Ps. 31:6-7 – I trust in the LORD. I will be glad and rejoice in your love, for you saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul.

Ps. 34:1-4 – I will extol the LORD at all times; his praise will always be on my lips. My soul will boast in the LORD; let the afflicted hear and rejoice. Glorify the LORD with me; let us exalt his name together. I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.

Ps. 35:9-10 – Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation. My whole being will exclaim, “Who is like you,  O LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them.”

Ps. 42:1-6 – As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, “Where is your God?” These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng. Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise q him, my Savior and my God.

Ps. 57:1-3, 5 – Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in you my soul takes refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed. I cry out to God Most High, to God, who fulfills his purpose for me. He sends from heaven and saves me, rebuking those who hotly pursue me; Selah. God sends his love and his faithfulness. … Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth.

Ps. 62:1-2 – My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. …

Ps 62:5-8 – Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.

Ps. 63:1-8 – O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water. I have seen you in the sanctuary  and beheld your power and your glory. Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you. On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.

Ps. 84:1-4 – How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young—a place near your altar, O LORD Almighty, my King f and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you. Selah
